How Do You Answer "Why Our Company?" in a Korean Interview?
Give one reason that fits only this company, connect it to something you've actually done, and say how you'd help. Open with ○○에 관심이 있어서 지원하게 되었습니다, then keep the whole answer under a minute.
You've just finished your 자기소개, and it went better than you expected. Then the interviewer leans back and asks: 우리 회사에 지원하신 이유가 뭔가요? "Why did you apply to our company?"
It sounds like the easiest question in the room, and that's exactly why so many answers fall flat. "It's a big, stable company" or "I've always liked Korea" could be said about almost anywhere.
Today you'll learn a simple three-step answer in Korean: one reason that only fits this company, one piece of proof from your own experience, and one line on how you'd help.
At a glance
| Situation | Korean | When to use | English |
|---|---|---|---|
| Open with your reason | ○○에 관심이 있어서 지원하게 되었습니다 | First line of your answer | I applied because I'm interested in ○○. |
| Name what's specific | 특히 귀사의 ○○ 사업이 인상 깊었습니다 | Right after your opener | Your ○○ business especially stood out to me. |
| Add your proof | 예전에 ○○ 경험이 있어서 | To link it to your own story | Because I've had experience with ○○ before... |
| Say how you'd help | 제 경험을 살려 ○○에 기여하고 싶습니다 | To close your answer | I'd like to use my experience to contribute to ○○. |
| Avoid as your only reason | 회사가 크고 안정적이어서요 | Never on its own | "Because the company is big and stable." Sounds like any company would do |
What are they really asking?
Underneath the question, many interviewers want to know two things: did you actually look into us, and will you stay and be useful? A reason that could fit ten other companies answers neither. A reason that only fits this one answers both at once.
So pick one thing that's true of this company and not every company: a product you've used, a market they're entering, a team or project you read about in their news or job post. Then say it simply: 해외 마케팅에 관심이 있어서 지원하게 되었습니다. "I applied because I'm interested in global marketing." Follow it with what caught your eye: 특히 귀사의 동남아 시장 진출이 인상 깊었습니다. "Your expansion into Southeast Asia especially stood out to me."
So if you remember one thing, make it this: one reason only this company fits, one piece of proof from your own experience, and one line on how you'd help.
When you talk about the company you're applying to, 귀사 is the polite, formal word, and it's what you'll see in cover letters. In a spoken interview it's fine too, though some people find it a bit stiff and say 이 회사 or the company's name instead. Both are okay.
The one to avoid is 우리 회사. The interviewer can say it, because it's their company. If you say it, it can sound like you're already acting as if you've got the job, or like you mean your current employer.
How do I connect it to my experience?
This is the part that makes your answer yours. "I did social media marketing during an internship, so I wanted to go deeper in this field."
It doesn't need to be impressive. A class project, a part-time job, or a product you used every day all count, as long as it really happened. Interviewers often ask a follow-up, and a true story is much easier to keep talking about than a polished one you made up.
What should the last line be?
End by looking forward: how you'd help them. "I'd like to use my experience to help you grow your overseas customer base." If you're an international candidate, your languages or your home market can be a natural, honest piece of this.
Keep the whole answer to about 30 seconds to a minute. Three or four sentences is plenty, and it leaves room for the interviewer to ask more.

Try it today
Pick one company you'd love to work for. Write one sentence that starts with ○○에 관심이 있어서 지원하게 되었습니다, add one sentence of proof, and one sentence on how you'd help. Then say all three out loud and time yourself.
Many interviewers hear "big and stable" a lot. A short answer that sounds like you actually picked them is often the one they remember.
This week: find one thing only your target company does, link it to one real experience, and practice the three lines until they feel natural.
Quick questions
Is it okay to mention salary or benefits?
Not as your main reason. If it's honestly part of it, save it for later in the process, and lead with the work itself here.
Can I use the same answer for every company?
You can reuse the structure, but swap the first two lines every time. If your answer still works after you change the company name, it's too general.
What if I don't know much about the company yet?
Spend twenty minutes on their website, recent news, and the job post before the interview. One specific detail is enough to build your answer around.
